Why Two Tubs Both Say 60 Servings and One Runs Out First
A scoop is not a standard. Across the whey we track it runs from 30 g to 45 g, and that single choice decides how many servings your tub really holds and what each one costs you.
One scoop of whey protein in India weighs anywhere from 30 g to 45 g. We pulled the declared serving size from every whey product we track, and that is the real spread.
Which means one brand's serving is 50 percent bigger than another's, for the same word on the label.
That single choice decides how many servings the tub holds, how big the protein number on the front can be, and what you actually pay each time you drink one. It is the quietest piece of design in the whole category.

How many grams is one scoop?
There is no standard and no rule requiring one. The scoop in your tub is sized by the brand to deliver the serving it decided to declare.
Across our whey set the declared serving size runs from 30 g at the smallest to 45 g at the largest, and 35 g is the median. Most tubs cluster between 30 g and 36 g, with a distinct group of 45 g outliers.
So when a friend says "just take one scoop", that instruction means something different depending on which tub is in front of you.
Why one 1 Kg tub gives 33 servings and another gives 22
Take two 1 Kg tubs. Identical weight of powder, identical shelf, very different serving counts.

Same kilo of powder, and the serving count swings from 22 to 33. If you drink one a day, one tub lasts three weeks and the other lasts nearly five.
Does the servings number survive a calculator?
Multiply the scoop weight by the declared servings and see whether you get back to the pack weight. Sometimes you do not.
Avvatar Whey Protein 1 Kg declares 35 g servings and 29 of them. 35 times 29 is 1,015 g, which is more powder than the 1,000 g tub contains. The real answer is 28 full level scoops with a bit left over. The count has been rounded up.
MuscleBlaze Biozyme Whey PR 1 Kg declares 45 g servings and 22 of them, which comes to 990 g, so that one is honest with a little slack for what sticks to the tub.
This is not fraud. It is rounding, and every brand does it. But it means the serving count on the front is a best case, and your real count is a scoop or two lower before you have even touched the powder.
Why brands pick a bigger scoop
Two reasons, one practical and one commercial.
The practical one. A less concentrated powder needs more of itself to hit a given protein number. If your blend is 66.7 percent protein and you want 30 g in a serving, the scoop has to be 45 g. There is no way around the arithmetic.
The commercial one. The protein per serving number is what goes on the front of the tub, and a bigger scoop makes it bigger. Thirty grams of protein per serving sounds stronger than 24, even when the second tub is the more concentrated powder. We covered the wider version of this in how brands inflate protein numbers.
A smaller scoop plays the opposite trick. More servings per tub makes cost per serving look low, which is the number a lot of buyers compare.
The protein percentage hiding in your scoop
Divide protein per serving by serving size and you get the one figure that scoop design cannot move: how much of the powder is actually protein.
Across the whey we track, that runs from 64.9 percent to 90 percent, with a median of 77.1 percent. The top of the range is an isolate, MuscleBlaze Raw Whey Isolate at 90 percent. The bottom is a flavoured blend.
The rest of the scoop is not filler in a sinister sense. It is carbohydrate, fat, cocoa, flavouring, sweetener, thickeners and moisture. Isolates sit higher because more of the lactose and fat has been filtered out, which is the actual difference between concentrate and isolate. What fills the remainder is the subject of what is actually inside your whey protein scoop.
What a bigger scoop costs you in rupees
Here is where it turns into money, and where the two common ways of comparing tubs disagree with each other.
On the day we checked, MyProtein Impact Whey 2.5 Kg had the lowest cost per serving of any whey we track, at about 108 rupees. Cheapest per serving in the whole catalogue.
It is not the best value. Its 30 g scoop carries 20.64 g of protein, so on cost per gram of protein it comes to 5.25 rupees. Avvatar 2 Kg Malai Kulfi costs more per serving at about 127 rupees, but its 35 g scoop carries 28 g of protein, which works out to 4.54 rupees per gram, the cheapest protein in our whey set.
Cost per serving asks what one scoop costs. Cost per gram of protein asks what the protein costs. A small scoop with a modest protein number wins the first and loses the second, and the first is the one most people compare. Across our whey set, cost per gram of protein runs from 4.54 to 9.75 rupees, which is a far wider real spread than the sticker prices suggest.

Level or heaped?
Level. Every number on the label assumes a level scoop of the declared weight, including the protein figure you are counting toward your daily target.
A generously heaped scoop can hold 10 to 20 percent more powder. Apply 15 percent to a tub that declares 33 servings and you get about 28. Five servings gone, which on a 4,000 rupee tub is roughly 600 rupees of powder you did not plan to use.
There is nothing wrong with taking more protein if you need it. Just do it on purpose, and count it properly.

Do it once per tub and you will never wonder again why the powder ran out early.
Is a 45 g scoop a red flag?
No. It is information, not an accusation.
The two 45 g tubs in our set both deliver 30 g of protein, which is a genuinely large serving, and both land at 66.7 percent protein by weight. That is a normal concentrate style blend. The powder is not worse, it is less concentrated, and you will get 22 servings from a kilo instead of 33.
The flag is not the scoop. The flag is a big scoop paired with a modest protein number, which means you are buying and drinking a lot of something that is mostly not protein.
The bottom line
Servings per tub is not a fact about the product. It is the pack weight divided by a number the brand chose, and that number varies by 50 percent across the shelf.
Two figures on the back of every Indian tub settle it: protein per serving and serving size in grams. Divide one by the other. Above about 80 percent is a concentrated powder. Around 70 is a normal blend. Below 65, you are paying to ship a lot of flavouring.
Then take that percentage to the price. Live whey protein prices across 19 retailers and putting two tubs side by side both show cost per gram of protein worked out already. And before you buy the next one, the checks to run before buying a tub is the wider list.

There is no standard. Across the whey products we track in India the declared serving size runs from 30 g to 45 g, with a median of 35 g. The scoop that comes in your tub is sized by the brand to deliver its own declared serving, so one brand’s scoop can be 50 percent larger than another’s.
Between about 22 and 33, depending entirely on scoop size. A 1 Kg tub with a 45 g scoop gives around 22 servings. The same 1 Kg with a 30 g scoop gives around 33. That is why two tubs of identical weight can advertise very different serving counts.
Almost always because you are heaping the scoop rather than levelling it. A heaped scoop can hold 10 to 20 percent more powder than the declared serving, which turns a 33 serving tub into roughly 28. Declared servings are also rounded up in places, so the label count is a best case.
Because the brand chooses the serving first and sizes the scoop to fit. A bigger scoop can carry a bigger protein number on the front of the tub even when the powder itself is no more concentrated. A smaller scoop produces more servings per tub, which makes cost per serving look lower.
Level. Every declared serving on the label, including the protein number you are counting, assumes a level scoop of the declared weight. Heaping it means you are taking more powder and more calories than the label describes, and your tub runs out early.
Use a kitchen scale and weigh the declared serving size printed on the label, which is the most accurate method anyway. As a rough fallback, a level standard tablespoon of whey holds roughly 8 to 10 g, so three to four tablespoons approximates a 30 g serving. Weigh it once and you will know what your own spoon holds.
Put an empty cup on a kitchen scale, zero it, then add one level scoop and read the weight. Do it three times and take the middle value. If it reads well above the declared serving size, you have been using more powder per shake than the label assumes, and your cost per serving is higher than you thought.
Neither by itself. A 45 g scoop delivering 30 g of protein is 66.7 percent protein by weight. A 30 g scoop delivering 27 g is 90 percent. The bigger scoop is not automatically worse, but it does tell you the powder is less concentrated, and you will get fewer servings from the same tub.
Across the whey we track, one scoop delivers between about 20.6 g and 30 g of protein, depending on both the scoop size and the concentration of the powder. The only way to know for your tub is to read the protein per serving figure on the back, next to the declared serving size in grams.
