Is Your Protein Powder Worth the Price? 10 Tubs Compared by Cost per Gram of Protein

The sticker price tells you almost nothing. We divided the price of 10 popular tubs by the protein actually inside them, and the dearest costs 2.8 times as much per gram as the cheapest.

A ₹4,000 tub of whey looks expensive. A ₹1,900 tub looks like a bargain. Neither number tells you what you are actually buying, which is protein.

One tub carries 24 g of protein a scoop, another 30 g. Scoops, pack sizes and prices all differ. So we took 10 of the most popular protein powders on Whey2Much and reduced each one to a single number: how many rupees you pay for one gram of the protein inside.

The short version
  • ·Across these 10 tubs, protein costs ₹2.73 to ₹7.68 a gram
  • ·The dearest costs 2.8 times as much per gram as the cheapest
  • ·Among the wheys alone, the spread is ₹5.11 to ₹7.68, a 50 percent gap
  • ·Two Avvatar tubs at the same ₹3,999 differ by 12 percent per gram
  • ·The isolate with the dearest tub here holds the most protein of all ten
  • ·Cost per gram measures protein cost only, not quality, taste or digestion

How we compared them

The ten cover the main kinds of protein powder sold in India: whey concentrate, whey blends, whey isolate, a low carb isolate and fermented yeast protein. For each one we used the brand's declared label and the lowest in-stock price across the retailers we track.

The formula

Cost per gram of protein = price ÷ (protein per serving × servings in the pack). A ₹4,000 tub holding 800 g of protein costs ₹5 for every gram. This is not price divided by powder weight: a 1 kg tub does not contain 1 kg of protein.

Price is the lowest in-stock offer across the 19 Indian retailers we track, checked on 29 October 2026. Protein in pack is declared protein per serving times declared servings. Prices move daily; the live figure is on each product page.

For context, these are ten popular tubs, not the whole shelf. Across all 43 whey tubs we track, the median that day was ₹5.63 per gram and the cheapest was ₹3.35. The full, live list is on the protein powder price comparison.

Tub by tub

1. SuperYou Fermented Yeast Protein, Chocolate

Price ₹1,842Per gram of protein ₹2.73

The cheapest protein here by a wide margin, at roughly half the cost per gram of any whey on the list. It is not whey, though. Fermented yeast protein is dairy free and lactose free, and still a complete protein, which suits vegans and anyone whom whey does not agree with. Taste and texture differ from whey, so try a small pack first. The full trade off is in whey vs fermented yeast protein.

2. Avvatar Whey Protein, Chocolate Hazelnut

Price ₹3,999Per gram of protein ₹5.11

The best value whey of the ten. Its 35 g scoop carries 27 g of protein, so the tub holds 783 g. Compare it with Avvatar Belgian Chocolate further down: same brand, same ₹3,999, but this flavour carries 3 g more protein a scoop, which makes it 12 percent cheaper per gram.

3. MuscleBlaze Biozyme Whey PR, Cookies and Cream

Price ₹3,599Per gram of protein ₹5.45

A big 45 g scoop with 30 g of protein, at a price that was ₹350 lower than a week earlier when we first drafted this. That swing alone moved it from sixth to third, which is the clearest argument for checking the live price before you buy rather than trusting any list, including this one.

4. MuscleBlaze Biozyme Performance Whey, Rich Chocolate

Price ₹3,899Per gram of protein ₹5.57

It costs ₹100 less than either Avvatar tub, yet more per gram than Chocolate Hazelnut, because the tub holds 700 g of protein against 783 g. A lower sticker price that buys less protein is the exact trap this comparison exists to catch.

5. MuscleTech NitroTech Whey Protein, Milk Chocolate

Price ₹3,430Per gram of protein ₹5.72

The cheapest tub on the list but a smaller 907 g pack, holding 600 g of protein. Each 45 g scoop also carries 3 g of creatine, which our calculation does not credit. If you already take creatine separately, you are paying for it twice.

6. Avvatar Whey Protein, Belgian Chocolate

Price ₹3,999Per gram of protein ₹5.75

The same price as Chocolate Hazelnut with 24 g of protein a scoop instead of 27 g. Flavour variants of the same brand are not always the same product, so check the exact variant's label rather than assuming every flavour carries the same protein.

7. MyProtein Impact Whey, Chocolate Brownie

Price ₹4,099Per gram of protein ₹6.21

The smallest scoop here, 30 g carrying 20 g of protein, so the tub holds 660 g. Per gram it sits above the median for whey. It is a familiar global brand and often discounted heavily in sales, which is when it becomes competitive.

8. MuscleBlaze Raw Whey Isolate, Unflavoured

Price ₹5,599Per gram of protein ₹6.28

The most interesting row. Its tub costs more than most here, but at 90 percent protein by weight it holds 891 g of protein, more than any other tub on the list. That is why a ₹5,599 isolate costs only a little more per gram than a ₹4,099 concentrate. If you want an isolate for lactose or macros, this is the value one.

9. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey, Vanilla Ice Cream

Price ₹4,629Per gram of protein ₹6.65

A trusted global name in a 907 g tub holding 696 g of protein. You pay a premium of about 30 percent per gram over Avvatar Chocolate Hazelnut. Many buyers pay it happily for familiarity and taste; just know that is what the extra rupees buy.

10. Isopure Low Carb 100% Whey Protein, Dutch Chocolate

Price ₹5,949Per gram of protein ₹7.68

The dearest protein here on the day we checked. It is a specialist low carb isolate, 25 g of protein and 2 g of carbohydrate a scoop, which matters if you are counting every gram. If you are not, MuscleBlaze Raw Whey Isolate gives you isolate for about 18 percent less per gram.

The real gap is inside the same shelf

SuperYou at ₹2.73 against Isopure at ₹7.68 is a 2.8 times gap, but those are different kinds of protein. The more useful comparison is whey against whey: from Avvatar Chocolate Hazelnut at ₹5.11 to Isopure at ₹7.68 is 50 percent more for the same gram of whey protein.

Over a month of one 25 g scoop a day, that is about ₹1,930 of difference. Over a year, more than ₹23,000. The tub price alone would never have told you.

What cost per gram leaves out

A scoop is not only protein, and this number deliberately ignores everything else. It does not tell you:

Protein source

Whey concentrate, isolate and fermented yeast suit different diets and stomachs.

Amino acid profile

Whey and fermented yeast are both complete proteins, but their profiles differ.

Other ingredients

Creatine, enzymes, sweeteners, carbs and fat vary, and some you may not want.

Digestion and taste

A cheap tub you cannot finish, or that bloats you, is not good value.

Label accuracy

The calculation trusts the declared protein figure, so buy brands that test.

Your diet

Powder fills a gap in your protein target. It does not replace meals.

So use cost per gram to compare products that already suit you, not to choose a product on its own. For checking whether a label can be trusted, see how to check your protein powder is real.

The discount is not the deal

Read the price, not the badge

A tub marked 40 percent off can still cost more per gram of protein than one with a smaller discount, because the percentage is measured against an MRP the seller chose. Compare the price you actually pay against the protein you actually get.

Why MRP discounts mislead is covered in that 50 percent off is not a discount.

Work it out for any tub

Tub price₹4,000
Protein per serving25 g
Servings in the tub30
Total protein (25 × 30)750 g
Cost per gram (4,000 ÷ 750)₹5.33

Use the declared protein, never the powder weight. Or skip the arithmetic: every product page on Whey2Much shows cost per gram of protein live, and the side by side comparison puts any two tubs next to each other.

The verdict

No protein powder is the best for everyone. But there is a better way to compare them than the number on the tub.

Pick the type that suits your diet and your stomach, then buy the one that costs least per gram of protein on the day you buy. In this comparison that was SuperYou for a dairy free option, Avvatar Chocolate Hazelnut for whey, and MuscleBlaze Raw Whey Isolate for an isolate.

And if a tub costs a lot more, make sure you know what the extra is buying. Sometimes it is a better formula for you. Sometimes it is just the most expensive tub.

Editorial note, sources and disclaimer

This article reflects the editorial opinion of Whey2Much. No brand paid to be included or influenced the results, and Whey2Much sells nothing and takes no commission. Prices are the lowest in-stock offer across the 19 Indian retailers we track, checked on 29 October 2026, and change daily. Protein figures are each brand's declared serving size, protein per serving and servings per container, as recorded in our database. Declared figures describe what a label claims rather than what laboratory testing would find. Cost per gram of protein does not account for the separate value of amino acids, creatine, enzymes, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins or other ingredients, and is not a ranking of nutritional quality or effectiveness. Common questions

It is what you pay for each gram of protein inside a tub. Multiply protein per serving by the number of servings to get the total protein, then divide the price by that total. A ₹4,000 tub holding 750 g of protein costs ₹5.33 per gram.

Of the 10 popular tubs in this comparison, SuperYou Fermented Yeast Protein, Chocolate, is cheapest at ₹2.73 per gram of protein on 29 October 2026. The cheapest whey here is Avvatar Chocolate Hazelnut at ₹5.11. Across every whey we track, the cheapest that day was ₹3.35 per gram. Prices move daily, so check live figures before buying.

Across the 43 whey tubs we track, the median was ₹5.63 per gram of protein on 29 October 2026. Anything around ₹5 is good value, ₹6 is typical, and above ₹7 you are mostly paying for a brand or a specialist formula such as a low carb isolate.

Because tubs hold different amounts of protein. Scoops run from about 30 g to 45 g and carry 20 g to 30 g of protein. Two Avvatar tubs in this comparison both cost ₹3,999, but one holds 783 g of protein and the other 696 g, so one costs 12 percent more per gram.

No. It measures one thing, what you pay for protein. It does not account for the protein source, digestion, taste, the other ingredients in a scoop, or third party testing. Use it to compare products that already suit you, not to pick a product on its own.

Only if you have a reason: lactose sensitivity, or keeping carbohydrates and fat to a minimum. Isolate is more concentrated, so a high priced isolate can still be reasonable per gram. MuscleBlaze Raw Whey Isolate holds 891 g of protein in a 1 kg tub, the most in this comparison.

Protein per serving ko servings se multiply kijiye, isse tub mein total protein milta hai. Phir tub ki price ko us total se divide kijiye. Jaise ₹4,000 ka tub jismein 750 g protein hai, uska cost ₹5.33 per gram hai. Tub ka size nahi, andar ka protein compare kijiye.
