Is Your Whey Real? Five Checks Before You Open the Tub

You already own the tub. These five checks tell you whether the powder inside is what the label claims, and which popular home test is wasting your time.

A study of 36 protein supplements sold in India found that 25 of them contained less protein than the label claimed. That is 69.4 percent, and it is where the viral "70 percent of protein is fake" line comes from.

The line misquotes the finding. Mislabelled is not the same as counterfeit. Most of those were real tubs, from real companies, that simply did not deliver what they advertised. A counterfeit is a different problem with different tells.

You already own the tub. These five checks tell you what you are actually holding, and take about ten minutes in total. The last section covers three popular home tests that prove nothing at all, so you can stop doing them.

Counterfeit, adulterated or just underdosed

Three different things go wrong with supplements in India, and people use one word for all of them. Sorting yours matters, because the checks differ.

Counterfeit. Someone else's powder in a copied tub with copied branding. This is the one the seal, batch and licence checks catch.

Adulterated. A genuine tub from a genuine company containing something it should not, whether a cheap filler or a contaminant. Only a laboratory catches this.

Underdosed or amino spiked. A real product that delivers less usable protein than the label says. This is by far the most common of the three, and it is what the study measured. The label arithmetic in check four is your best signal.

Check 1: does the FSSAI licence number exist?

Every food supplement sold legally in India carries a 14 digit FSSAI licence number on the label. It is usually small, on the back panel near the manufacturer details.

Go to the FoSCoS portal at foscos.fssai.gov.in and use its licence search to look the number up. A genuine, active licence returns the business name, address and validity.

What you are looking for is a mismatch. The licence should belong to a company that plausibly makes or imports this product. A number that returns nothing at all, or returns a business with no connection to the brand on the tub, is a genuine red flag.

What it does not tell you is whether the powder is any good. A licence certifies that a business is registered to handle food, not that this batch matches its label. We went through exactly what it covers in what an FSSAI licence actually certifies.

Check 2: do the batch code and dates agree?

Genuine manufacturers print the batch number, manufacturing date and expiry directly onto the pack, usually as a laser or ink jet stamp on the tub or the foil. It is slightly rough, sits in the same place on every unit, and does not rub off.

Things worth a second look:

  • A sticker covering where a printed code should be
  • A date that has clearly been printed over another one
  • A manufacturing date more than two years before you bought it
  • Expiry and manufacturing dates that do not match the shelf life stated elsewhere on the pack
  • A batch code that smudges under a thumb

Relabelled stock is not always counterfeit. Sometimes it is old inventory given a new face, which is its own problem.

Check 3: the seal, the code, and what a pass does not prove

Check the outer shrink wrap, the tub's tamper ring and the inner foil across the mouth of the tub. All three intact is a good sign. A missing inner foil on a tub sold as new is not.

Most large brands also print an authenticity code, often under a scratch panel or as a QR code, which you check on that brand's own verification page. Use the brand's official site, reached by typing the address yourself, rather than a link on the listing.

A code that verifies is not proof the powder is real

This is the part almost nobody mentions. A verification code proves the packaging is genuine. It cannot prove that the powder inside the packaging is. Refilled tubs, recovered packaging and cloned codes all pass a scan. Treat a green tick as one signal out of five, not as the answer.

Check 4: does the label arithmetic add up?

This is the check that catches the common problem, and you can do it with the back of the tub and a calculator.

The BCAA test. Whey naturally contains a fairly fixed proportion of branched chain amino acids. We pulled the declared figures from every whey label in our database: across 32 products that declare both, BCAAs run from 20.2 to 24.2 percent of the declared protein, with a median of 22.1 percent.

So take the BCAA grams on your label and divide by the protein grams. If it lands near a fifth to a quarter, that is exactly what real whey does. A number far above that band, especially with free amino acids in the ingredient list, is the signature of a protein figure propped up by cheap additions.

Worked example

A label declares 24 g protein and 5.8 g BCAA in a 35 g scoop. 5.8 divided by 24 is 24.2 percent, which sits at the top of the normal band. That is a real Avvatar label from our own data. Now add up the macros: 24 g protein, 4.1 g carbs, 1.9 g fat comes to 30 g of a 35 g scoop, leaving 5 g unaccounted. That gap is normal. It is moisture, minerals, cocoa, flavouring and sweetener. Across our 44 whey labels it runs from under 1 percent to 20 percent of the scoop, with a median near 10 percent.

A scoop where the declared macros leave a very large gap is worth a question, though flavour and added ingredients explain most of it. What is actually in that remainder is the subject of what is actually inside a whey scoop.

Check 5: who actually sold it to you?

Most counterfeit supplements reach people through a seller, not through a brand. So the listing tells you a lot.

  • Read the sold by and dispatched by lines. A brand store or a named authorised seller is the easy answer
  • Check the brand's website for its own list of authorised online sellers
  • Be wary of a price far below every other seller of the same pack

That last point needs a number, not a feeling. Across the products we track, the gap between the cheapest and dearest listing is most often between 100 and 500 rupees, and a quarter of products swing past 1,000. So a wide gap is normal. A listing at half of what every other seller charges is not part of that pattern, and deserves a minute.

The home tests that prove nothing

Three tests circulate constantly on Indian fitness Instagram. None of them work, and believing them is worse than doing nothing, because a pass makes people stop checking.

The boil testHeating whey in water makes it clump, because heat denatures protein. Genuine whey clumps. Adulterated whey also clumps. The result is the same either way.
The float or dissolve testHow powder behaves in water depends on lecithin, particle size, flavouring and how hard you shake. Plenty of genuine whey leaves foam or residue. It measures mixing, not authenticity.
The foam testFoam comes from proteins and emulsifiers at the surface. A lot of foam, a little foam, neither tells you what is in the tub.

The only thing that definitively answers "what is in this powder" is a laboratory assay. Everything else, including our five checks, is inference.

What a mislabelled tub actually does to you

Usually it wastes your money. If your tub delivers 18 g of protein where the label claims 24, you are short by a quarter on every scoop, and the protein target you thought you were hitting was never hit. That is the realistic harm for most people, and it is the subject of why your protein is not working.

The safety question is contamination rather than shortfall. The 2024 study of 36 Indian supplements reported aflatoxins in 5 samples and trace pesticide residue in 3, alongside trace metals detected in many. The researchers described most metal findings as trace levels rather than acute hazards, and the study tested a snapshot of products in one market, so it should be read as a reason for better regulation rather than a verdict on your specific tub.

The bottom line

The realistic risk in India is not that your tub is a criminal forgery. It is that a real company sold you less protein than it promised, and the study of 36 products suggests that is common.

So check the licence, check the batch print, check the seal, run the BCAA sum, and look at who sold it. Five checks, one tub, ten minutes. And ignore the boil test.

A private protein assay at an accredited food testing laboratory is possible, and laboratories accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories publish their own price lists. Costs vary widely by test and city, so ask two laboratories directly rather than trusting a figure quoted online. For most people the cost is only worth it if a large quantity is involved.
