Mass Gainer or Whey Protein? What Skinny Guys in India Actually Need

The word mass sounds like the goal, so the skinny guy buys the gainer. One serving is 1,243 calories and 254 g of carbohydrate, and once you work out the cost per gram of protein, the cheap looking tub is the expensive one.

A single 334 g serving of ON Serious Mass carries 1,243 calories and 254 g of carbohydrate. A scoop of whey carries about 135.

The gap between those two numbers is the most expensive mistake a skinny beginner in India makes, and it happens because the word "mass" sounds like the goal.

Here is what is actually inside each tub, what each one costs per gram of protein on live prices, and a three step test for whether you need a gainer at all.

The short version
  • ·Gainers are 10 to 18 percent protein by weight. Whey is 65 to 90
  • ·Gainers cost 6.29 to 11 rupees per gram of protein. Whey costs 4.54 to 9.75
  • ·So the cheap looking tub is the expensive way to buy protein
  • ·A gainer solves one narrow problem: genuinely being unable to eat enough
  • ·Most beginners can eat enough and have not tried consistently for two months
  • ·If you want calories, rice and peanut butter are far cheaper than any powder

What you are actually buying in a gainer tub

Take ON Serious Mass, the tub most Indian beginners end up with. Its declared panel gives a 334 g serving containing 1,243 calories, 254 g of carbohydrate and 50 g of protein.

Work out the proportion. 50 g of protein in 334 g of powder is 15 percent. The other 85 percent is mostly carbohydrate, and most of that carbohydrate is maltodextrin, which is the cheapest ingredient in the supplement industry.

Across all the gainers we track, protein runs from 10.3 to 18 percent of the powder. You are buying a sack of carbohydrate with some protein stirred through it.

What a whey serving gives you instead

Whey in our catalogue is 64.9 to 90 percent protein by weight. A serving is a median of 26 g of protein for about 135 calories.

That is the entire design difference. A gainer is built to deliver calories with protein attached. Whey is built to deliver protein with as little else as possible.

Why a gainer's 50 g of protein is not what it looks like

A gainer tub advertising 50 g of protein per serving sounds better than a whey tub advertising 26 g. It is the same trick scoop size plays everywhere, just larger.

To get that 50 g you eat 334 g of powder and 1,243 calories. To get 26 g from whey you eat 35 g of powder and 135 calories. Per gram of protein, the gainer costs you roughly nine times the calories.

If those calories are the point, fine. If you just wanted protein, you have bought 254 g of carbohydrate you did not need at a price per gram that beats rice by an embarrassing margin. More label games in how brands make a protein number look bigger than it is.

Every single gainer sits above the cheapest whey. The best gainer on this measure, MuscleBlaze Mass Gainer XXL at ₹6.29, still costs 39 percent more per gram of protein than Avvatar 2 Kg at ₹4.54.

You can put two tubs side by side on cost per gram of protein for any pair you are considering.

How long a tub really lasts

This is the number that surprises people. A 3 kg gainer tub sounds enormous. At the label serving it is not.

TubServingsAt 1 a dayAt 2 a day
ON Serious Mass 1 Kg33 days1.5 days
ON Serious Mass 3 Kg99 days4.5 days

GNC Pro Performance 3 Kg66 days3 days
MuscleBlaze Mass Gainer XXL 3 Kg3030 days15 days

Servings per tub at the brand's own declared serving size. The enormous variation is scoop size: 100 g against 485 g.

A 3 kg tub of ON Serious Mass is nine servings, because the serving is a third of a kilo. At two a day it is gone in under a week. That is the real monthly cost of a gainer habit, and it is nothing like what the tub size suggests.

The three step test

  1. 1Work out what you actually eatNot what you think you eat. Write down three honest days. Most people who believe they cannot gain weight are eating far less than they estimate.
  2. 2Work out what you needRoughly 15 times your body weight in kg gives a rough maintenance figure in calories. Add 300 to 500 for a slow gain. At 55 kg that is around 1,650 maintenance and 2,000 to 2,150 to grow.
  3. 3Try to close that gap with food for two monthsAn extra meal, a glass of milk, a handful of nuts, peanut butter on toast. If after two honest months you genuinely cannot do it, a gainer is solving a real problem.

Most people fail at step three because they never really tried, not because their body refuses to gain. Work out your protein side of this in how much protein you actually need.

What 600 calories costs from your own kitchen

The shake that costs a fraction of a scoop

250 ml of full cream milk, a banana, 40 g of oats and a tablespoon of peanut butter gets you to roughly 600 calories with real food, for far less than one serving of most gainers in the table above. Add a scoop of whey and you have the same thing a gainer sells, with protein you can account for and carbohydrate you chose.

It takes three minutes and a blender. That is the honest comparison, and the gainer's real advantage is that it needs neither.

Why gainers leave so many Indians bloated

Two reasons, and both are worse in India.

Volume of carbohydrate. Two hundred and fifty grams of rapidly absorbed carbohydrate arriving at once is a lot for any gut. Bloating, gas and sluggishness after a gainer shake are common and unsurprising.

Lactose. Most gainers are milk based and many people mix them with more milk. Research using hydrogen breath testing in healthy Indian adults has found lactase deficiency in roughly 57 percent of northern and 79 percent of southern participants. A big milk based shake is a large lactose load for a population where malabsorption is the norm. The fixes are in why protein powder makes you bloated.

You already bought 3 kg. Now what?

Do not throw it away and do not force it down twice a day either.

Use half servings. A half serving of ON Serious Mass is about 620 calories and 25 g of protein, which is a sensible addition to a day rather than a replacement for one. Take it on training days only. A 3 kg tub then lasts around six weeks instead of a week, and you get the benefit without the surplus running away from you.

Then when it runs out, buy whey and food instead.

What eight weeks should look like

A surplus of 300 to 500 calories a day is roughly 1 to 2 kg a month on the scale, and in a beginner training properly, a reasonable share of that is lean mass rather than fat.

If you are gaining faster than 2 kg a month, you are mostly adding fat. That is the single most common outcome of a gainer taken at label dosing, because the label dosing was written to sell powder rather than to fit your maintenance calories.

Speak to a doctor first if
  • ·You have diabetes, prediabetes or PCOS, or any insulin resistance
  • ·You have kidney or liver disease
  • ·You are underweight and do not know why, which deserves investigation rather than a tub
  • ·You are under 18, or buying this for someone who is
  • ·You are pregnant or breastfeeding

The bottom line

A mass gainer is calories with protein attached, sold at a protein price. It is 10 to 18 percent protein and it costs more per gram of that protein than whey does.

For almost every skinny beginner in India, the answer is whey plus more food, for two months, tracked honestly. If you genuinely cannot eat enough after that, buy a gainer, buy the one with the best cost per gram of protein, and take half servings.

Compare what you are considering on every mass gainer and weight gainer we track, and read the sugar table before you buy one. If this is your first tub of anything, the proteins we would actually put in a first shopping basket is the better starting point.

The calorie and surplus figures are rough population level guides, not a personalised plan, and being underweight can have medical causes that deserve investigation rather than a supplement. Speak to a doctor before starting a deliberate calorie surplus if any of the conditions listed above apply to you. All protein, carbohydrate, calorie and serving size figures are the values declared by each brand on its own nutrition panel as recorded in our database, with prices from our live tracking across 19 Indian retailers, all checked on 16 September 2026 and subject to daily change. Declared figures describe what a label claims rather than what laboratory testing would find, and no product here was independently tested by us. The Indian lactase deficiency figures come from published research using lactose hydrogen breath testing in healthy northern and southern Indian adults. Common questions

Whey plus more food, for almost every beginner. A gainer solves one narrow problem, which is being unable to eat enough calories. Most beginners can eat enough and simply have not tried consistently. Whey is also cheaper per gram of protein: 4.54 to 9.75 rupees across our catalogue against 6.29 to 11 for gainers.

Yes. Weight gain comes from a calorie surplus, and whey adds protein and some calories to whatever you already eat. A whey serving is a median of 135 calories, so you will need food alongside it. That is a feature: you control where the calories come from instead of buying them pre-mixed with maltodextrin.

Try food and whey first for two months and track it honestly. If you genuinely cannot eat enough despite trying, a gainer is a reasonable tool. Buying one on day one because the word mass sounds like the goal is the most common and most expensive beginner mistake in Indian gyms.

It can, because it makes a calorie surplus very easy to reach. One serving of ON Serious Mass is 1,243 calories. Taken twice a day on top of normal meals, that is a surplus far larger than the 300 to 500 calories a day most people should aim for, and the excess arrives as fat rather than muscle.

You can, but it usually means you bought the wrong thing. A gainer already contains protein. If you are adding whey because the gainer does not have enough, you have paid a premium for carbohydrate you could have bought as rice for a fraction of the price.

For a healthy adult eating it as part of a planned surplus, it is food in powder form. The considerations are the amount of rapidly absorbed carbohydrate, which ranges from 70 g to 405 g per serving in the tubs we track, and the sugar, which reaches 29.15 g in one scoop. If you have diabetes, prediabetes or PCOS, speak to your doctor before using one.

Per tub, gainers often look cheaper. Per gram of protein, they are not. Across our catalogue gainers cost 6.29 to 11 rupees a gram of protein while whey costs 4.54 to 9.75. If you want calories rather than protein, rice, bananas, peanut butter and milk are cheaper than both.

Zyadatar logon ke liye whey aur zyada khana behtar hai. Mass gainer sirf tab kaam ka hai jab aap sach mein kaafi calories nahi kha paate. Ek serving mein 1,243 calories aur 254 gram carbs ho sakte hain, aur protein ke hisaab se gainer whey se mehenga padta hai.

Not automatically. Work out what you actually eat in a day first. A 55 kg person who needs around 2,100 calories to gain slowly can usually get there with an extra meal, a glass of milk and some nuts. If you have tracked honestly for two months and cannot get there, then a gainer is doing a real job.
